While some countries are taking steps limit the types of information that is available to their citizens, others allow complete freedom. At the moment Australia is considering introducing restrictions on access to specific sites and so it is timely to examine issues on both sides of the debate.
This essay will argue that there should be limited censorship of the internet, restricted to those areas where there is a real threat to human safety and a risk of damaging the morality of children and young adults. Censorship of the internet is necessary to ensure a safe society. These days terrorist groups, both from within Australia and outside are threatening the lives of innocent people. These groups wish to de-stabilise or even destroy the very basis of our culture and society.
Their purpose is to impose their own beliefs and ways of living onto others. These groups often use the internet for their purposes. They use it to spread propaganda, and to influence the minds of young people to join them in performing terrorist acts. In addition, society is threatened by the publication of information on how to make explosive devices and other weapons. This type of information should therefore be removed from the internet.
